Sensitive Riparian Program

Watersheds: Middle Kansas River Sensitive Riparian Program (SRP) Policy:
  1. Project area must be submitted to the Stakeholder Leadership Team (SLT) on the Project Proposal Form and approved by a majority of the members before a contract is signed.
  2. Projects must be within the priority area as outlined in the nine-element plan and must protect sensitive riparian area near tributaries.
  3. Financial assistance will not exceed $80 per acre per year for ten consecutive years. Payment in full after riparian area is planted. Program is year to year thereafter.
  4. 70% financial assistance for establishment of riparian/vegetation area.
  5. Landowners/operators must keep a buffer of 30 feet from nearest stream with 180 feet maximum.
  6. Practices allowed on sensitive land after riparian/vegetation is established: a. Flash grazing allowed between October 1 through March 15 each year. Must maintain 4-6 inches of vegetative cover. Alternative water source for livestock required. b. Haying allowed June 15 through September 15. c. Mowing/management of unwanted species d. Maintenance of land is required and the responsibility of the landowner/operator. This includes but is not limited to noxious weeds/undesirable plants, insects, and pests in order to avoid adverse impact on surrounding land.
  7. Should practice be terminated before end of contract date, all payment of 10 years must be returned in full to KAWS, including establishment of riparian planting.
  8. No maximum payment limits. Enrollment into program will be dependent on funding available.
